More Detailed Information on Brewing Coffee
What’s the best way to brew a perfect cup of coffee? Answer: the way you like it! There is no right or wrong answer here. Only guidelines. We offer the following suggestions:
- Use clean, fresh cold water every time - Brewed coffee is about 98% water so it’s best to use filtered or bottled drinking water because odors and chlorine have been removed from them. Do NOT use distilled or softened water. If you boil your water, let it sit for a minute or two—boiled water is too hot for proper brewing.
-
Use quality beans that are fresh - To get maximum flavor from your bean, it’s always best to buy freshly roasted, whole bean coffee and grind it just prior to brewing. At Bean Lover, all of our coffees are “roasted when ordered”, then they’re immediately air-cooled and hand packed in one-way valve bags to guarantee maximum freshness.
-
Grind only what you need just prior to brewing - To ensure the freshest, most aromatic cup of coffee, start with whole beans and grind only what is needed for each cup or pot. Small individual grinders are very affordable and are available at most discount stores. If you want to grind more than that, grind enough for 2-3 days only, then store the ground coffee in an airtight container.
-
Use the correct grind - To determine the grind you need, consider this simple "rule" - the longer the brewing cycle, the coarser the grind. If your coffee tastes weak, flat & boring, try using a finer grind. If it tastes sharp & bitter, try using a coarser grind.
-
Consider "oxygen bleached" filters - If available, oxygen bleached filters are a good choice. They do not pose the environmental problems that chlorine bleached filters do and offer better cup quality than unbleached filters. If you can’t find oxygen bleached filters, use the brown, unbleached ones.
-
Keep your equipment clean - We can’t stress this enough. Coffee’s rich taste comes from its oils, which, in time, build up on your equipment. A simple washing with mild soap goes a long way to keeping your equipment well tuned and the flavor of your coffee at its best.
-
Use about two tablespoons of ground coffee per six ounces of water - Most people will find this "brewing formula" will make an enjoyable full flavored cup without being overpowering.
